Progressive web app for tracking and sharing expenses with friends, purpose built as a Splitwise alternative.

— 1 / Brief

I've been using the well-known expense tracker app 'Splitwise' for years, but got fed up with their free-tier limitations. So I decided to build my own self-hosted replacement for myself and friends to use, restriction free. The requirements were simple: create an intuitively easy to use, mobile-first web app to accurately track and split expenses. Feature rich, performant, secure, accessible and easy on the eyes.

— 2 / Approach

I began by planning which features to build and creating an implementation plan detailing architecture decisions, data model, user journeys, stack, core money splitting logic, testing strategy and 6 build milestones. My first priority, to ship a usable MVP, was done in an afternoon with the directed assistance of multiple Claude Code agents. From there it was about adding and testing features, refining the UX and polishing the UI. Developed with several agents working in parallel across git worktrees against one local Postgres database in Docker.

— 3 / Outcome

Homeslice is live and in daily use, hosted on Vercel. Users can create a profile and sign in with a magic link, add friends and create groups. The core feature of expense tracking and splitting is precise and flexible, written in framework-free pure TS modules - integer-cent arithmetic with 5 split methods: equal, exact, percent, shares, and +/- adjustment. The app is backed by 159 unit and 65 integration tests, can be easily installed as a PWA, and has more features on the way.
